What would you recommend for a 1,000 square foot at home gym on a $1,750.00?

    Hey DAD! (lol)

1000 sq ft is HUGE! $1750 is an immense starting budget. Read: starting.

Ok so let’s get some basic things clarified:
    – who will be using the gym? Lifting experience?
    – what can you play with in your environment? Any rafters or ceiling cross beams? Flooring?

From these questions, we can start painting a picture of:
    – necessary equipment
    – gym layout
    – DIY projects

A good example of challenge with my home gym when i was starting out was really the budget of several hundred dollars only. I started with just KB and DBs for half a year saving up.
Then when I decided to expand, my hardwood deck out the back of my house was the only open space I could use. I had to consider spending hundreds on thick rubber flooring or build a lifting platform to minimize buying expensive rubber and totally protect my deck.

Things like that you build overtime. So, get back to me with an idea of what you picture this home gym to be 😀

Zi, I will be using the gym along with my wife and a few others. I have extensive lifting experience with Olympic lifts and with isolation training (think body building). Essentially, I will be following the MPFPT models for strength, agility, and conditioning. The inside of the garage is not flat so I know that I will be building a level platform for a rack location which I will place ply wood under the center and gym flooring where the weights would hit the ground for dead lifts/Kleins. The overhead is the sub-floor joists of the first floor. I’m getting an Ohio bar, bumper set to 425 lbs, adjustable decline to incline bench, KB’s (one lite, 2 medium, 2 heavy and one very heavy), a TRX suspension training set, a set of boxes from 24″ up to 48″, elastic bands, and if or when I have the money a full set of DB’s from 5- 100 lbs.

I got to this list after much consultation but I am ready and willing to hear and incorporate more ideas. Thanks, Jason.

That sounds like the whole budget already.

I’m assuming you will have 3-4 additional people in the gym at one given time.

A DB and KB set will go a long way. People new to training can train a ridiculous amount with just DB and KB. DB snatch, kb swing, KB front rack, side loading…. These people can progress very very far.

Only cause you said you are familiar with Oly lifting, i’d agree with getting the bar, rack and lifting platform.

In terms of conditioning, a slideboard or an air/fan bike will easily fit in there.

In the future, look at getting a trap/hex bar as a priority.
Personally I always try not to spend on brand new manufactured equipmemt if i can get away with something. USA has easy craigslist to find used equipment, but not so much in Perth Australia where I am at.

So, what i think is a very attractive advice is to be creative and work with what you got to its fullest. Save ur money on other things if u can. As an example, here’s a GHR setup i recently put together:

Glad you’re getting a home gym and having athletes use it as well. Best decision ever!
