    Hi,
Maybe it’s a silly question, but I always wondered how can I increase my pull range (backhands). Is it just a matter of strength+technique? Is core a main ingridient in this? Or maybe something else?

Coincidentally I was thinking about how we could train for disc throwing power few days ago.

So far i’ve concluded that disc throwing is very different from ball throwing in other sports. The force we impart on a disc is has a spin and momentum component. How the disc travels (shape of flight) will influence the distance more that how much force you put into it. There is a balance between all of these components and simply trying to jack a disc harder isn’t going to change anything much.

So, understand that disc throwing is very much technique over strength.

However, if we are talking just the strength needs of throwing a disc, we definitely need good core strength and stability while performing the throwing motion. A stable pillar will allow you to impart more force into the throw. Otherwise, the energy leaks into “soft” areas in the kinetic chain and your technique becomes inconsistent.

That’s why our programming has lots of anti-rotation, anti-extension, anti-lateral flexion, and rotational stability exercises. Not only that, due to the volume of throwing we do, we have lots of pushing/pulling and shoulder rehab exercises to maintain shoulder stability and health. Go figure hehe.
