Hi! I’ve just subscribed and I’m impressed (overwhelmed?) by the amount of information available!
My background: I am 37.5 and have been lifting for 10 years (mostly over winter/spring), starting with “standard gym programs” and gradually going towards olympic lifts, including a few years with the Ultimate Athlete Project in between.
Despite my age I plan to peak for WUCC July 14th – 21st 2018.

For the moment my plan is to start with “Program zero / DB, KB, BB” until Christmas, then check out the other programs and build a plan.

    Now my questions are:
    1. What is the purpose of Phase 0 ( https://mpfpt.com/library/fundamentals/program-zero-phase-0/ )? Should I add some time before starting only dedicated to studying those patterns?
    2. Could it be useful to add something else “in parallel” of “Program zero”? I’ve read posts of people adding “Ladder 0”, “Agility 0” etc.. but I don’t really know what would be the best investment in this time of the year. I cannot realistically commit to more 4x workouts / week so I would have room for another 2x workouts.

    Thanks in advance!

OK so after studying over the weekend I have an answer for my question 1. The movements described on Phase 0 should be worked on during Phase 0.

My question 2. still stands, what is best to invest my time doing in parallel of “Program zero” for 1 to 2 workouts a week?

    Thanks!

If you aren’t peaking until July, I’d probably not look into the conditioning items until early next year.

When i did program 0/1 i did 2 days that were lifting only, and the other 2 workouts I combined Ladder 0/Agility 0 since both were fairly short. Just make sure you’re following the proper principles and making sure you’re keeping intensity up and resting appropriately for the combined session. If i felt my ability to go full bore being compromised I’d end the session early, rather than groove in lazy footwork.

Giacomo sorry to just be seeing this and Gary thanks chiming in I like the thought process of saving the SA work for when it matters most.

Giacomo… the point of Phase 0 is so you can understand these basic patterns / cues that will be coming up again and again and again throughout the course of all programs from SA.Zero, One, Two through SP.Zero, One, Two, Triphasic. One, Two and all conditioning.

Just practice them a bit before your first lift then remind yourself to use them as you move forward.

Program.Zero is a SP development program therefore you will need to move significant load and your body will need time to recover. Therefore 2-3 x per week in the gym is enough. Hopefully Program.Zero 3 x a week will be up soon so you can have that option… for now if you feel recovered you can repeat the first or second workout to make for a 3 x a week program.

Gary is right about his timing of SA. If you don’t have to peak til July you may want to save SA. However, you can never get too good at the SA Skills… so if you are up for it, get out there and run the workouts. If you can get through SA.Zero,One and Two before July along with SP.Zero and SP.One you will be a monster in July!
